It is the preferred timber for plantation shutters because it is stable (resistant to warping), accepts paint and stain finishes well, and is light enough to use across wider shutter panels without making them heavy to operate. Basswood shutters are heat and moisture tolerant but they are not the best option for very wet areas like bathrooms and laundries. For high-humidity rooms, we recommend our thermopoly plantation shutters, which are made from a thermopolymer composite specifically engineered to resist moisture, warping and cracking. Basswood works well in living rooms, bedrooms, dining rooms and most other internal spaces.

Basswood shutters need careful cleaning to protect the timber and finish. For regular care, dust the louvres with a soft cloth, microfibre duster or vacuum brush attachment. For deeper cleaning, wipe the louvres with a slightly damp soft cloth, then dry immediately. Do not soak basswood shutters, do not spray water directly onto them, and avoid harsh chemicals as these can damage the finish and the timber underneath.
