Your Questions, Answered
-
Plantation shutters are interior window coverings made from horizontal louvres set inside a frame, which is mounted directly to your window or wall. The louvres tilt open and closed using a tilt rod or hidden mechanism, giving you precise control over light, ventilation and privacy. They are a permanent window treatment that replaces traditional blinds, curtains or rolling shutters.
-
Our plantation shutter range includes four materials, each suited to different rooms and conditions. Basswood shutters are traditional timber-look shutters that are heat and moisture-tolerant with a lightweight design. Thermopoly shutters are made from a thermopolymer composite designed for high-humidity environments like bathrooms and kitchens, offering moisture resistance, insulation and noise reduction. Aluminium shutters are built to withstand harsh Australian weather and are ideal for indoor-outdoor living spaces. Australian-Made shutters are manufactured domestically using local materials and techniques.

Plantation shutters work by tilting the horizontal louvres inside each shutter panel. You rotate a tilt rod (which sits on the front of the shutter) or use a hidden tilt mechanism to angle the louvres open, closed or anywhere in between. The full shutter panels themselves are hinged and can also be folded back from the window when you want a completely unobstructed view. This gives you three levels of control: fully open, louvres tilted to any angle, or fully closed.
-
Plantation shutters get their name from the large plantation homes built in the southern United States during the 18th and 19th centuries, where these shutters with wide louvres were used to manage heat and light in the warm climate. The wide louvre design (typically 63mm to 114mm) and the louvre-and-frame construction has carried through to today's plantation shutters, even though they are now manufactured for residential homes across the world rather than plantation estates.
-
Yes, but the material matters. For bathrooms and kitchens where humidity and moisture are high, we recommend thermopoly plantation shutters. Thermopoly is a thermopolymer composite specifically engineered to resist moisture, warping and cracking in high-humidity environments. Basswood and aluminium shutters can also work in some bathroom and kitchen applications but thermopoly is our standard recommendation for wet areas.
-
Yes. Plantation shutters can be configured for sliding glass doors, French doors, bi-fold doors and standard hinged doors, as well as windows of almost any shape. We assess the opening during the free measure and quote to recommend the right shutter configuration: bypass, bi-fold, hinged or fixed.
-
Plantation shutters are easy to maintain because they do not collect dust the way fabric blinds and curtains do. Regular maintenance is simply dusting the louvres with a soft cloth, microfibre duster or vacuum brush attachment. For deeper cleaning, wipe the louvres with a slightly damp soft cloth and mild soapy water, then dry immediately. Basswood and Australian-made shutters should not be soaked or sprayed with water directly. Thermopoly and aluminium shutters are more moisture-tolerant and can handle slightly more aggressive cleaning.
-
Plantation shutters are a permanent window treatment that adds value to your home, lasts decades when properly maintained, and gives you the most precise light and ventilation control of any window covering. They cost more upfront than fabric blinds or curtains but are typically the last window treatment you will need to install. For Wollongong and Illawarra homes facing coastal salt air and strong sun, the right shutter material (especially basswood or aluminium) is a long-term investment that pays back in durability and energy management.
-
Once you approve the quote, your plantation shutters are custom fabricated to your exact window measurements. Typical turnaround from approval to installation is several weeks depending on the shutter material and current workload. Installation itself usually takes one to two hours per window once the shutters arrive. We service the full Illawarra region from Helensburgh to Gerringong, and every installation is covered by our workmanship guarantee.
-
Plantation shutter pricing depends on the material (basswood, thermopoly, aluminium or Australian-made), the size of the window, the louvre size, the frame type, the colour, and whether the shutters fit standard or non-standard window shapes. Because every set of shutters is custom-made, we provide pricing through our free in-home measure and quote service. Our team visits your home, assesses every window you want covered, recommends the right material for each room and provides a quote.
