Vertical blinds are a window covering made from individual fabric or PVC slats (also called vanes) that hang from a track at the top of the window. The slats rotate together to control light and privacy, and can be drawn open to one side, the other side, or split open from the centre. Vertical blinds are particularly suited to large windows, sliding doors and floor-to-ceiling openings.

Most vertical blind slats can be cleaned in place. Vacuum each slat using the upholstery attachment on low suction to remove dust. For marks and stains, wipe each slat with a soft cloth lightly dampened with mild soapy water, then dry immediately. For more stubborn dirt, fabric slats can usually be removed from the track, washed gently and rehung once dry. PVC slats can be wiped down with a damp cloth without needing removal.

For routine cleaning without removing the slats, vacuum each slat with the upholstery attachment on low suction. For dust between slats, run a microfibre cloth or duster down both sides of each slat. For marks, lightly dampen a soft cloth with warm soapy water and wipe each slat individually, then dry with a clean cloth. Always wipe in the direction of the slat to avoid creasing the fabric.

Vertical blind slats are held in place by a carrier clip at the top. To remove a slat, rotate the slats to the fully open position, then gently squeeze the top of the slat and lift it up and out of the clip. Most slats come out with light pressure. If a slat is stuck, the carrier clip may be damaged and need replacement. We can supply replacement carrier clips if your blinds were originally supplied by Bayside.

If your vertical blinds won't rotate, the most common cause is a worn or broken carrier clip in the track, a damaged tilt mechanism, or the wand being disconnected from the rotation mechanism. Carrier clips can be replaced individually. The tilt mechanism inside the headrail can also be repaired or replaced. Mould on vertical blinds is common in bathrooms and humid rooms, particularly in coastal Illawarra suburbs. For fabric slats, remove them from the track, soak in warm water with white vinegar, then wash on a gentle cycle and dry thoroughly in sunlight if possible. For more stubborn mould on white fabric, a small amount of oxygen-based bleach can be used. PVC slats can be wiped with a vinegar and water solution. For delicate or non-washable fabrics, professional cleaning is the safest option.
